Webmaster Tools News
I'd like to say, first, that not everyone who has a website is a webmaster. There are a lot of things that must be learned before you master this complicated business. However, some of the newer tools make it much easier to master the craft than it used to be.
I'll be covering both the tools for traditional webhosting and for the complete services such as Site Build It!, which provides a wide variety of tools to make marketing on the Internet much easier -- and much more effective -- than it usually is with more traditional tools. Sure, it costs more, but you get much more value for the money than you do with other services.
Even old webmaster dinosaurs like me can learn from what Site Build It! offers, and I'm working on a new site hosted by them. No other hosting service comes with an 800+ page ebook with step-by-step instructions on how to put their complete system to work for you. It's by far the best collection of webmaster tools that I've found in one place. And you certainly can't argue with their results.
How does your website -- or your main competitor's website -- compare? Take the traffic test and see for yourself.
As news of other webmaster tools becomes available, I'll post it here.
Google Adsense Optimization Webminar

Context Tag: Google Adsense I'm a bit late letting you know about this webinar that was held about a month ago by the Google Adsense Optimization team.
You may find information here to help you earn more money by publishing Adsense ads on your website or blog.
Do you want more visitors to your website?
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, March 11 2005 at 11:08 AM Category: webmaster_tools
Earlier today, I wrote an article about using blogging to help bring more visitors to your website -- for free. I'm sure that's something that everyone with a website would like.
Follow the steps in the article:
How to get more visitors to your website for free
If you are technically inclined, it will take less than an hour to do this and you should see more visitors to your site in the next couple of weeks or less.
If you are not particularly technically inclined, follow the steps just as they're shown and you can do this in less than two hours. I think you'll be happy with the results of such a small amount of time and effort.
If you've been having a hard time getting your site listed in the major search engines -- Google, Yahoo, and MSN -- this technique has been known to be effective in getting your site spidered and indexed in under a week.
Of course, you have to do your part and create quality content for both your website and your blog on a regular basis, but this will help you get into the search engines or get higher placements in the results.

The big lie about the Internet is that it's easy to make money. Just put up a website and everyone will come and buy what you offer and you can retire rich with no effort.
It's just not that easy. Anyone can put up a website in a few hours or days, but most of those sites die a slow death because of a lack of visitors and buyers.
However, it doesn't have to be that way. The key to a successful website is good quality content. People on the Internet are not searching for you, they're searching for information to help them solve a problem or accomplish a goal.
By providing that information in a format that is easily indexed by the search engines, those same search engines will send hundreds or thousands of visitors every month to your site for free. You don't have to keep advertising once you learn how to build a site that provides what people are searching for.
I learned about Ken Evoy when I first bought his ebook, Make Your Site Sell!. That was the best $17 I ever spent. He updated the book in 2002 to over 1500 pages of quality information and raised the price to $30. Now, the 2005 edition is very close to release and will be available at the link earlier in this paragraph.
Over the next four years, he and his team have built the best web design, website hosting, and website promotion service on the planet, and they sell this service for only about one dollar per day. I'm using Site Build It! to build A Year From Now and I'm seeing a steady increase in visitors every month, even though I won't go into full development on that site for another month.
I love the products that Ken sells, and I've arranged to give away -- free -- several of his ebooks, all of which are in Acrobat PDF format. If you go to the Free Ebooks category of the Downloads section, you can download any of the courses on that page at no charge.
The Net Auctions course sold for $30 just last year, and now it is offered free.
The SBI Action Guide is the first edition of the Site Build It! step-by-step guid to building a successful business on the Internet. This is not the current version, but Ken allows me to give this one away so you can learn about the process.
Even if you decide to go another way with your website, there is valuable information in all of these ebooks to help you be more successful with your online marketing efforts.
I'm happy to be able to offer them to you.
Optimizing for Inktomi
Posted by johndilbeck on Monday, January 26 2004 at 10:48 AM Category: webmaster_tools
(February 15, 2004. The article I originally pointed to is a reprint of another article written for a search engine optimization organization. I was contacted by the company and requested to point to their company and article, which is fair enough. However, that site requires registration before you can access the article, so I'm removing my quote from it. If I could have just pointed directly to the article, I would have been happy to do so. If you want to read the article, search on Google for 'How to Optimize for Inktomi in 2004'. -- JD)
The information in this article is a basic overview of creating search engine friendly websites and everyone who builds, manages, or owns a website should be familiar with the information in this article.
The information here, however, is only part of the story in how to create a website that sells. You MUST be listed in the search engines, but that's only one step.
Most sites are build so that they're doomed before they start. Many small business owners follow something similar to this model:
1. Create a product or service (or decide to sell an existing product or service online).
2. Create a site to sell the product or service.
3. Add payment and fulfillment solutions.
And then they...
4. Watch their sites die slow deaths of neglect, due to lack of traffic and willing buyers.
5. Wonder what went wrong.
If you want your website to have a chance for success, you must follow proven strategies. Fortunately, you don't have to invent these yourself.
You don't succeed by "putting up a site" and waiting. It is all about understanding how people really use the 'net and then building your site to deliver what they're looking for.
Your prospective visitor may or may not be interested in buying. They ARE looking for information. The more information you can provide, the more likely you are to create a relationship with them that may one day lead to selling your product or service. You must learn to give before you can expect to receive.
I've written many times about learning how others are successful in making their websites attractive to both humans and search engine spiders. I've learned much of what I know about this from Ken Evoy.
I learned today that Ken has just released a free, updated version of his Netwriting Masters Course, and this free course (available as a downloadable ebook in .pdf format) addresses the vital differences betwen selling and PREselling -- a concept that Ken identified several years ago. (He discusses this concept and much more in his free Affiliate Masters Course and Service Sellers Course.)
For any small business that wants to be successful online, the steps to success are exactly those that form the foundation of the highly successful SBI! product.
1. Write high quality content related to the theme or topic of your business or passion.
2. Use the quality content to draw free, targeted traffic from the search engines.
3. PREsell the traffic, use it to gain trust and confidence -- people buy from those they like and trust!
4. Convert your traffic into dollars -- whatever your business or monetization model. Once you've successfully completed steps 1 through 3, it is the time to start generating dollars from your Web site.
Sure, it takes more effort and time, but the investment in your site pays off in the long run.
These steps involve a different type of writing for your websites -- what can be called Netwriting. Write to deliver what humans want -- information. Write for two audiences -- humans and search engine spiders.
The Netwriting Masters Course is the first and only course that shows you how to get the whole process correct.
And it's free.
Download your free copy of the Netwriting Masters Course today.
Don't just download it. Study it. Learn from it. Implement it on your website and watch your traffic and income rise.
Working with Radio Userland version 8.
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, January 2 2004 at 3:11 AM Category: webmaster_tools
Yesterday morning, I was totally frustrated with trying to get the new version of Radio Userland to work for me as I expected.
That's not the best time to work or write about what you're doing.
After taking about 24 hours off, I was able to redo the five pre-set categories so that they were as they were before I started changing things. Now, I can go in and add a couple of dozen new categories for the things I'll be writing about, here.
I've been working with what is now Radio Userland since the days of Clay Basket, and I have to admit that if I were just encountering it for the first time and had no preconceived notions, the new version of RU is the best yet. I get into trouble when I try to force an old mindset onto a new tool.
Let's see how this works after another hour or two of prep work.
Even on this old 120 MHz 8500 Macintosh (nearly 10 years old), the performance is more than acceptable.
