Book of the Day

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley.
This is an outstanding book (one of a series, but it stands well on its own) that retells the story of King Arthur and Camelot from a different viewpoint.
It is one of those books that I just couldn't put down when I read it the first -- and the second -- time.
You may also be interested in The Mists of Avalon video and The Mists of Avalon: Original Television Soundtrack with its great celtic music.

Steel Rose Being Auctioned on eBay
Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, August 31 2002 at 2:29 PM Category: (default)
I am currently auctioning a small waxed Steel Rose That Never Wilts, #69, made in May 2001. This is the first Steel Rose that I've auctioned, and the bidding started at $0.01.
This Steel Rose would normally retail at $100.00. Currently, the bidding is quite a ways below that and you might be able to get yourself a real bargain.
Because of Mom's condition, I don't know how many roses I'll be able to make this year, and currently the waiting is approximately three months for one. Here's a chance to get one in less than a week.
More information on my JD's Auctions page. Click the link next to the Steel Rose in the listing to go right to the eBay auction page.
Why Tara is Running
Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, August 31 2002 at 2:18 PM Category: (default)
Sometimes a kind of glory lights up the mind of a man. It happens to nearly everyone.
She wants to fight for the rights of the individual against the system. For our rights to creativity and self-expression versus the goliaths that want to gain all those rights exclusively for themselves.
Do you support the goliaths that are struggling mightily to defeat each of the creative individuals?
New combined Shirts, Hats and Mugs store!
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, August 30 2002 at 8:39 AM Category: (default)
I am currently working to build a new combined John Dilbeck's Shirts, Mugs and Hats store that will eventually have all the different designs I've created in one single store. Now, you'll find it much, much easier to purchase multiple items from different categories. It will take a few weeks to get it all together, but I'll be working steadily on it.
Tara Grubb for Congress Radio Weblog
Posted by johndilbeck on Sunday, August 25 2002 at 9:35 AM Category: (default)
Tara Grubb is running for congress in North Carolina's 6th District, and while I don't live in her district and can't vote for her, I want to tell you that she is one of the only candidates I know of who is using the Internet to directly communicate with voters in her district and people around the world.
She's doing that using a weblog, and while she's brand new to it, she's learning as she's going.
Tara Sue's Weblog uses some of the same tools I use for communicating. She's putting herself on the line to express her ideas, unfiltered through PR folks, directly to the web.
I'll be following her progress and I think you might want to see a glimpse of how politics will work in the future.
(Note: She now has a more interactive site hosted on Manilasites.com where you can join as a member and receive email updates, if you're interested. I updated the link, above, to point to her new website.)
Books of the Day

Now that I'm back to smiting metal, I'd like to recommend the best selling books on blacksmithing, metalworking, and metalsmithing at Amazon.com.
I've read many of these books and I'll be buying more as I have time to read them.
I'm smiting metal again!!!

After months of not being able to get to my smithy and do what I love to do, I finally made it there this morning and was able to spend several hours starting the process of making some new steel roses.
Yes, that means that Mom's doing better and we both agree that she's progressed to the point where she can safely get out of the house by herself if there is an emergency.
This has freed me to spend a few hours in my smithy some mornings. As she gets stronger I'll have more time to smite steel and she'll be able to resume the things she wants to do. Things are looking up.
I decided to start another photo diary of the process and thoughts I go through making my Steel Roses That Never Wilt. Perhaps you'll enjoy looking at the photos and reading my thoughts. You can see them in my Make a Steel Rose album.
I'll be adding to this as I have time to work on the project.

Today, I've been thinking about photography and I'd like to recommend a great technical book that will help you take better photos: National Geographic Photography Field Guide: Secrets to Making Great Pictures.
If you're looking for inspiration and good examples, the obvious place to look is National Geographic Magazine. There's a good reason many people keep these magazines instead of throwing them away.

Movie of the Day
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, August 9 2002 at 8:21 AM Category: (default)
One of the themes I tend to consider from many points of view is the question of what is reality and what is the perception of reality. I've come to think that the only reality we experience is our perception of reality, which may be one reason why eye witnesses to various events tell such different stories about what they saw, heard and otherwise experienced.
One movie that illustrates this idea very well is Being There, starring Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine.
Another movie that explores this theme is Harold and Maude, starring Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort.
In both of these movies, by changing (or misunderstanding) a perception of reality, reality is changed. This is illustrated, as well, by the very different reviews the movies receive from different viewers.
I have seen both of these movies several times, and each time I enjoy them a bit more and see something new. I recommend these movies.

If you're a fan of Austin Powers and like spoofs of the James Bond 007 genre, you'd probably like one of the original parodies of the genre, Our Man Flint, starring James Coburn. Girls, gadgets and laughs abound.

Song of the Day
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, August 2 2002 at 7:28 AM Category: (default)
As my first choice for Song of the Day, I'm not going to select just one song. Instead, I'm going to pick two albums that I've listened to for years. In both cases, I've worn out several cassettes and have at lest one CD of each.
The first time I heard of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, was in the movie Paint Your Wagon. I liked their sound. Later, when I saw a cassette of theirs called Will the Circle be Unbroken (now available in the 30th Anniversary Edition), I was attracted to check out the contents. That's when I realized that many of the original Appalachian music stars were featured on it. Of course, I bought it, and I've listened to it hundreds of times.
I'm also a huge fan of the Eagles, and I think their best album/CD was Eagles - Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975. I've worn out several of these cassettes, given some as gifts, and have the CD. I can't pick just one of their songs that I like the most, but I love this collection. I also love the art on the cover.
Apparently, I'm not the only one sharing these opinions, since the CDs I've selected also have the highest sales rank at Amazon.com for each of the bands.
I love these two albums/CDs and most of my friends do, too. I think you will, as well.
Has a book, movie or song helped you look at life differently?
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, August 2 2002 at 6:59 AM Category: (default)
I find, now that I'm thinking about it just about every day, that there are lots of books, movies and songs that have made a difference in my life. Some of them would probably surprise you.
So, has a book, movie or song made a real difference in how you view the world or yourself?
If it has, feel free to email me at jd@johndilbeck.com and let me know. I'll either put up a special page in my bookstore or suggest your favorite as a book, movie or song of the day.
Book of the Day
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, August 2 2002 at 6:52 AM Category: (default)
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting Arch Avary for the first time since Mom had her surgery, and now that she's no longer homebound, she was able to go, too.
I always love visiting Arch, and there's no telling what we'll discuss when we're together. We got to talking about books that have been important to us and he reminded me of a great book that I haven't re-read in years but which was important to me when I last read it.
Thanks to Arch, today's Book of the Day is The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery and Richard Howard.
At first glance, this is a simple children's book, but as is revealed in the book, what is most real is seen with the heart and not with the eyes. If you've never read this book, or if it's been a while, I recommend re-reading it with the eyes, and more importantly the heart, of an adult.

I've always loved Michelangelo's sculptures and paintings. I'm going to choose The Creation of Adam from the Sistine Chapel as my art of the day.
