Getting things back under control

It has been a very long time since I have posted here.

2006 was a very complicated and difficult year, and I'm afraid I got sidetracked from what had been a successful online marketing business.

It started when I wanted to know if it would be better to have one primary blog where I could talk about multiple subjects or to have multiple blogs, each of which concentrated on one topic.

To test this, I created about 24 blogs on Blogger.com. Things were going well until December 2005, when I started running into problems with Blogger. To make a very long story much shorter, I moved all my blogs but one off of blogger and spent the next year or so trying to find the best solution to accomplish what I wanted to do.

During 2006, I created many blogs using many blog platforms. I tried using WordPress hosted on individual domains, WordPress hosted on WordPress.com, Radio Userland, Manila, and several other platforms. I built over 50 domains and tried different techniques to see what would get the best results from natural search engine results and from one way links from a variety of forums, blogs, websites, traffic exchanges, advertising sites, and lenses.

The more I tried, the less sure I was of the results, but one thing became crystal clear: I was spending all my time testing and building sites and the results were deteriorating as things got more complex.

Finally, I could no longer keep all the plates spinning and they started to fall and shatter.

Hackers found several of my blogs and destroyed them. I started over and it happened again. Right now, my Cherokee County NC Blog isn't working and I'll be tearing it down and starting over in the near future.

JohnDilbeck.com has been full of errors for several months following a move to a new server by my hosting company - which I knew nothing about until I found the mess.

I got part of those errors corrected this morning and things are looking up a bit.

It has been a difficult 15 months, but I know a lot more about building websites, blogging, and trying to juggle too many things at once.

In January, 2007, I started simplifying.

I've deleted well over half of my websites, and more are being taken down every week. I'll be moving all of my websites except one to a new server over the coming week or two and I'm sure that will introduce new errors, but the company is sound and the technical support folks are experienced and able. It will take a month or two to get things working as I want them to work.

I'm looking forward to getting away from all the testing and back to promoting people and organizations that are doing good things. I'll be turning my attention back to helping business owners promote their businesses in Cherokee County, NC, again.

Almost all of my blogs will disappear or be mothballed. My primary blog will be John Dilbeck And Friends and John Dilbeck Ramblings will be my primary way of updating what is going on at JohnDilbeck.com.

Speaking of JohnDilbeck.com, it has totally lost its focus as I transitioned from arts and crafts to blacksmithing to promoting Cherokee County, NC, to doing way too much of everything else. It is way past due for a makeover and I'll be trimming things down, deleting hundreds of pages, consolidating blogging, and doing my best to make it look better while delivering information you may find useful.

I'm hoping that I will have things back under control by early summer and will do my best to make it worth your while to visit this website and my other forums, lenses, and blogs, too.

Stand by! I haven't abandoned this site. It has taken much longer than I thought to get everything working as I wanted. For just one person, I've bitten off a huge bite that has taken a very long time to chew! I've tried to do more than would be expected by a whole team.

Thanks for dropping in and I hope you will find a reason to return.

Act on your dream!

JD
