Non-Profit Creates Unique Online Exchange
Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, March 26 2005 at 1:16 PM Category: nonprofits
Small non-profit start-up, Oaktree.org, has launched an online exchange that facilitates financial help, prayers and encouragement between those in need and those willing to help. In short, they facilitate the exchange of hope for individuals.
(PRWEB) March 23, 2005 -- The sleepy coastal town of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, would be the last place you might look for the next big thing on the internet. Within the last week, a non-profit website with a completely unique concept has launched. Rather than new software that connects buyers and sellers or a website matching singles looking for a date, this start-up seeks to connect people seeking urgent help in many forms.
"We are a hope exchange," says Brady Stump, founder of Oaktree.org. Stump has founded Oaktree.org, which is an online exchange that connects people in need of financial help, prayers and encouragement to those willing to provide the help.
"Oaktree.org is different in three main ways. We are completely online, open source and fill a huge needs gap,” Stump says. “The best way to describe being completely online is that, instead of running some huge online exchange between buyers and sellers of goods, we have created an online exchange that facilitates prayers, encouragement and financial help between those in need and those willing to help. By putting the entire process online, we help people get help faster; and ultimately get hope faster!”
Stump also explained that the site is open source. By this, he means that the entire giving process is laid out for all to see and invites everyone to participate. Someone posts a public request for help in one of the three categories and anyone is free to volunteer to pray for, encourage or monetarily help out the person in need. The only thing that Oaktree.org asks of the person helped is that they post a public “thank you” and continue the generosity by pledging to help someone else out within the next 90 days.
Lastly, Oaktree.org seeks to fill a “needs gap.” “This is the ultimate goal of the site,” Stump says. He references many possible situations from a recent young amputee looking for encouragement, someone battling cancer that is asking for our prayers or a single mom in need of financial help with buying some winter coats for her kids. “Many times, the people in these situations may slip through this needs gap,” Stump explains. “Oaktree.org seeks to fill this gap.”
“I just hope that the site can speed up help and positive vibes to local people faster,” Stump exclaims. With the positive vibes flowing from Oaktree.org, Stump may start helping more than just the people from his local community. Positive words of encouragement, uplifting prayers and financial help may start flowing between people from coast to coast and that would be just fine with Oaktree.org.
Oaktree.org (www.oaktree.org) is an online exchange that facilitates financial help, prayers and encouragement between those in need and those willing to help.

Henn Theater Reopens! -- Murphy, NC 28906
Posted by johndilbeck on Thursday, March 24 2005 at 11:28 AM Category: cherokee_county_nc
Congratulations to Bill Grove, his wife, Beth, Betsy Henn Bailey, and everyone else who participated in all the hard work to get the Henn Theater ready for reopening last Friday.
P. J. Henn founded the theater in 1935 and this center of entertainment for our area will turn 70 years old this year.
Bill has announced that he wants the theater to have a classy feel to reflect its past, without the high prices associated with modern theaters.
Although the theater is undergoing rennovations and the equipment is being upgraded to modern standards, the theater will retain the feel of a small town theater.
I hope Bill Grove has a long and prosperous relationship with the Henn Theater.

Even Beginners Can Create Great Websites With WebMax Studio
Posted by johndilbeck on Monday, March 21 2005 at 3:02 PM Category: webhosting
Cognigen recently announced a new webbuilding and hosting service called WebMax Studio.
Whether you are a beginner or a professional webmaster, or somewhere in between, you can build professional-looking websites in days using WebMax Studio to design, build, and host your personal or business website, all for the price you would normally expect to pay for just one or two of the services included.
Choose from over 1,000 templates and ten different basic web page layouts. That's just a start of what this service offers.
Link to other sites with a Link Page. Host up to hundreds of photos in your Photo Album. Upload multimedia files including music, video, flash, pdf, and other formats for presentation on your site or for downloading. Create a custom Feedback Form for collecting visitor feedback. Host a Recommend this Site page. Host a discussion on your Message Board. Create a newsletter and mail it to anyone who subscribes on your site. Do you have to answer frequently asked questions? Create a FAQ page. Email information to anyone who requests it using your built-in Autoresponder. Maintain a Calendar to show any special events, meetings, or other items for all to see. Publish articles and announcements on your Articles Page. Offer coupons for your customers to print out and bring to your physical location. Post your Press Releases online. Create a shopping cart for hundreds of products. Learn about marketing your website and make use of the free services and tools to get more visitors.
All of this -- and more -- are included in the basic monthly price that is less than $20. Don't forget, you would normally expect to pay more than that for just one or two of the services offered in this package.
I'm rather particular in the webhosting services I recommend. WebMax Studio offers one of the best webhosting services I've ever seen.
(I still think Site Build It! offers a better set of tools and more flexibility for professional marketers, but I think WebMax Studio is a great bargain for everyone else.)
In less than two days, working part-time on it, I was able to create a very nice website that would have taken much longer using any other service or tools I've ever used, and I've been building websites since shortly after they were invented. Not only that, but it may be the nicest-looking site I've ever made.
You can see the test site at 21st Century Small Business. The main parts of the site were created in less than two days during the 10-day free trial period. I like it enough that I'm going to pay to host this site on the service as soon as the free trial ends. At that point, you can find it at 21stCenturySmallBusiness.com.
No experience is necessary, but WebMax Studio is powerful enough for professionals. The beautiful part of this service is that you don't have to activate or manage any of the parts you don't want. You are free to add a page or a section as you need it. Build your website one step at a time on your own schedule. Even if you have never built a site before, you can have a professional-looking site in days, without paying hundreds or thousands of dollars to someone else. If you build your own site, you'll learn a valuable skill and will be able to modify it any time you want.
If you choose, however, you can hire someone with experience to put up the initial site for you and get you started quickly with a site you will be proud to tell people about.
Webmasters can benefit by using this service to build a site for clients who can then take over editing and expanding the site, thus freeing the professional website creator to get more sites online during any given time period. You'll have happier clients, too, because they'll be able to update the site at their convenience, without waiting on you.
For more information about WebMax Studio -- and to get a free, no obligation, 10-day trial of their service, you are invited to visit WebMax Studio

Rotary Club Sponsors Interact Club -- Andrews, NC 28901
Posted by johndilbeck on Sunday, March 20 2005 at 8:00 AM Category: cherokee_county_nc
Andrews High School Interact is sponsored by the Murphy Rotary Club, which offers support and guidance, but is self-governing and self-supporting. Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 14-18.
Each year, Interact clubs are required to complete at least two community service projects -- one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill, the other which benefits the school or community. Interactors develop a network of friendships with overseas and local clubs and, in the process, develop leadership skills and learn the value of hard work.
Interactors also have the opportunity to work toward becoming youth exchange students or ambassadorial scholars.

Ten free white flowering dogwood trees will be given to each person who joins The National Arbor Day Foundation during March 2005.
The free trees are part of the nonprofit foundation's Trees for America campaign.
"White flowering dogwoods will add year-round beauty to your home and neighborhood," John Rosenow, the foundation's president, said. "Dogwoods have showy spring flowers, scarlet auburn foliage, and red berries which attract songbirds all winter."
The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between March 1 and May 31 with enclosed planting instructions. The 6-12 inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced, free.
Members also receive a subscription to Arbor Day, the foundation's monthly publication, and The Tree Book with information about tree planting and care.
To become a member of the foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Dogwood Trees, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, by March 31, 2005. Or go to their website at arborday.org.

100 Years of Rotary -- Murphy, NC 28906
Posted by johndilbeck on Tuesday, March 15 2005 at 9:19 AM Category: nonprofits
Murphy Rotary Club members and guests celebrated 100 Years of Rotary on February 28, 2005, by presenting Cherokee County Sheriff Keith Lovin with a $4,000 check to be used for shelter and safe keeping of the new police dog.
A longtime Rotary member, Jay Gernert, presented a brief history of the Rotary Club.
Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and help to build goodwill and peace in the world. Paul P. Harris formed the world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, on February 23, 1905. The name Rotary is derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. Today there are approximately 1.2 million Rotary club members of more than 30,000 Rotary clubs in 164 countries.
Among the many goals of Rotarians are promoting community projects and advancing world understanding and peace.
The Murphy, NC, Rotary Club meets every Monday at noon at Koo Koo's Buffet.
SCORE Opens New Office at Tri-County Community College -- Peachtree Community -- Murphy, NC 28906
Posted by johndilbeck on Tuesday, March 15 2005 at 7:44 AM Category: cherokee_county_nc
SCORE, one of the top volunteer business organizations in North Carolina has opened a new office at Tri-County Community College's Business Center.
"Our chapter was named the Outstanding SCORE chapter in the state of North Carolina for 2004, which is the second such award it has received in the past three years," said James R. Ballard, administrator of SCORE Association's Western North Carolina Chapter 242. "We have seen some real growth in our chapter, such that we have branch offices in Brevard, Rutherfordton, and now this one in Murphy."
The regional office is in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Since 1964, SCORE Association has provided counseling to prospective small business entrepreneurs in America. Currently known as "Counselors to America's Small Business," the national organization no longer requires its volunteer counselors to be retired, as it once did, said Ballard.
He said the primary purpose of any SCORE chapter is to provide advice and assistance to people who either want to start a new business or need help with an existing business.
"There are several ways to accomplish this goal," Ballard said. "We hold workshops, seminars, distribute appropriate literature, and inform through newspaper columns."
However, the most effective way to assist is to conduct direct counseling with the client. A fairly recent innovation in this field is email counseling.
"Thanks to this growth and our heavy involvement with email counseling, the chapter was recently named one of the top 10 email counseling chapters in the national SCORE organization."
Ballard said the Western North Carolina (WNC) chapter has also recently introduced a "team counseling" approach.
"The more historic form of counseling involves a one-on-one conference with the client, but SCORE has recently developed a new format," Ballard said. "We form our counselors into small groups of three or four and the entire group then meets with the client."
He said this method allows the client to benefit from a broader range of expertise, and also enables more counselors to become directly involved with clients without significantly increasing counselor caseload. Ballard said Judy Grove and Jerry Chautin are the local counselors, but the local group is "aggressively seeking more volunteers."
SCORE operates under the auspices of the United States Small Business Administration. So Ballard said counselors not only provide information on SBA leading programs, but also "maintain close contacts with the local banking community."
He said the new office is in the Jane Smith Patterson Building on the Tri-County Community College main campus in the Peachtree area of Cherokee County, NC.
The following people were present at the formation of the SCORE branch office at Tri-County Community College: Michael Arriola, Senior Area Manager of the U. S. Small Business Administration; Joe Hogg, Director fo the TCCC TeleCenter/Small Business Center; Judy Grove, local SCORE counselor; Richard Adams, SCORE Chapter Director; and James Ballard, Acting Murphy Branch Director.

Do you want more visitors to your website?
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, March 11 2005 at 12:08 PM Category: webmaster_tools
Earlier today, I wrote an article about using blogging to help bring more visitors to your website -- for free. I'm sure that's something that everyone with a website would like.
Follow the steps in the article:
How to get more visitors to your website for free
If you are technically inclined, it will take less than an hour to do this and you should see more visitors to your site in the next couple of weeks or less.
If you are not particularly technically inclined, follow the steps just as they're shown and you can do this in less than two hours. I think you'll be happy with the results of such a small amount of time and effort.
If you've been having a hard time getting your site listed in the major search engines -- Google, Yahoo, and MSN -- this technique has been known to be effective in getting your site spidered and indexed in under a week.
Of course, you have to do your part and create quality content for both your website and your blog on a regular basis, but this will help you get into the search engines or get higher placements in the results.
Get more visitors to your website -- FREE
Posted by johndilbeck on Tuesday, March 8 2005 at 11:23 AM Category: sitesell
Are you getting as much traffic to your website as you want?
Chances are, you aren't.
In the movies, maybe, if you build it they will come, but that certainly isn't true when it comes to websites.
Anyone can build a website and there are estimates that there are over 56 million sites that are being maintained on a regular basis. With that many sites, how is anyone supposed to find yours?
One way is to pay for every visitor, but the trouble with that is that as soon as you stop paying, the visitors stop visiting. I think we would both agree that it is better to build a steady stream of visitors and provide a pathway for more and more people to find your website over the coming months and years.
One of the ways I get visitors to my sites is through the major search engines, which send thousands of visitors to my sites every month -- at no cost to me!
So, what did I do to make this happen?
There are several things, and you can do them just as well -- or better -- than I do.
One of the key issues to getting more traffic is to create content that people want to read. Then, you have to get the search engines to regularly index that content so people can find you when they are searching for a solution to their problem or when they want to buy what you have to sell.
Another key issue is to link to quality websites that offer information in the same general field as you do, but which are not direct competitors.
So, how do you learn what works and what doesn't, and more importantly, how much is it going to cost you?
Nothing. Nada. It's free.
If you'll go to Ken Evoy's Value Exchange you can register your site -- for free -- to participate in a link exchange program that is different from others you may have seen or read about.
While you're there, download the free Make Your Links WORK! ebook. This ebook will tell you:
1. how to build the most time-and-money-efficient inbound links program to your website.
2. why links are important and how they fit into the big picture.
3. how to build a roaring online business that gets found by the search engines and that converts visitors into profits.
Forget what you may have heard about search engine optimization (SEO) and stop paying hundreds or thousands of dollars to try to trick the search engines. Learn how to work with the search engines and they'll work with you, month in and month out, at not cost!
SEO is doomed. It is important for small business marketers to understand that, and to adapt to the coming reality now.
It's free and it's been proven on thousands of sites.
Download Make Your Links WORK! right now, while you're thinking about it. Register your site with Value Exchange and start increasing quality targeted traffic to your website.
Appalachian Heritage Crafters Begin Fifth Year -- Murphy, NC 28906
Posted by johndilbeck on Tuesday, March 8 2005 at 10:54 AM Category: ahc
Appalachian Heritage Crafters, a nonprofit crafts cooperative, is gearing up for its fifth year of operation in 2005.
The idea of this cooperative, made up of local artists and crafters, was born when the local Levi's plant closed, leaving several people out of work. The Levi's ladies, along with local woodworkers, potters, painters, and other artisans, formulated a dream -- a way to preserve their Appalachian heritage of hand made crafts, a market for hand made crafts, a market for their own work, and a way to boost the then-sagging local economy. Their dream came to fruition with the opening of the retail shop at 2016 U.S. Hwy 64 W., Murphy, NC, across the four-lane from the Rib Country restaurant.
The store, closed in January and February for restocking and cleaning, will begin its 2005 season on Friday, March 4, 2005.
"Along with our retail operation, our artists and crafters will continue to expand our outreach program which helps our local schools supplement their poorly-funded arts education," said Claire Groff, past president and current board member.
AHC's outreach program also offers free membership and aid to crafters who are unable to participate in the regular program due to poor health or age, Groff said.
"Our outreach programs received an initial financial boost from grantors, such as Mary Babcock Reynolds and CORA, but those grants are mostly used up now," said Bette Kaufman, outreach co-chairperson. "In order to continue to offer our quality programs, we now depend upon donations from our customers and private supporters."
AHC also offers classes to the community, including basketry, oil and/or acrylic painting, sewing, and making a gourd bowl.
AHC's mission is to preserve and promote the Appalachian heritage of quality handmade crafts. This goal is achieved through training programs in schools and senior centers, programs providing outreach to home-bound seniors, and programs enabling local crafter members to create, market, and sell handmade crafts.
New artists and crafters are always welcome.
For more information about any of the Appalachian Heritage Crafters' programs or the store, log onto the web site at AHCcrafts.com, call the store at 828-835-3500, or stop by the store.
