Blog Feed Syndication Errors Corrected
Posted by johndilbeck on Thursday, December 29 2005 at 10:27 PM Category: rss_syndication
I just realized, while in the process of completely overhauling my blogging and blog feed syndication infrastructure, that the blog feeds in my Syndicated News section were not being shown.
Instead, all you could see were errors. Apparently this had been going on since December 8, 2005, or thereabouts. I was unaware of it until earlier today.
The problem has been corrected, and most of the newsfeeds are being syndicated as expected. There are two or three that have additional errors and I'll work to correct them as soon as I can.
Christmas 2005 Photos Uploaded to Flickr
Posted by johndilbeck on Tuesday, December 27 2005 at 7:32 AM Category: ramblings
I uploaded several photos I made on Christmas Day, 2005 to Flickr.com.
First, I visited Mom in the nursing home where she's recovering from a broken leg.
Second, I visited Dena at her home. She was feeling rather poorly and napped on the couch most of the afternoon. I had a blast playing with the grandkids and catching up with family and friends.
It was a great day and I hope you had a wonderful time with your family and friends, too.

Women for Women Grants Application Deadline -- February 3, 2006 -- Western North Carolina
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, December 23 2005 at 3:42 AM Category: western_nc
(Asheville, North Carolina) (Context Tag: Western North Carolina, Women for Women)
Almost one year ago, they began coming together, a group of women who wanted to create positive change for women and girls in western North Carolina.
They formed Women for Women and now have more than $185,000 to grant in the coming months to nonprofit organizations and public agencies that serve women in crisis. Grants from $30,000 to $100,000 are available, and the deadline to apply is Friday, February 3, 2006.
To date, 188 women have become members of Women for Women, a special initiative of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina that encourages women's philanthropy. Each member contributes $1,100 per year for three years, then together they learn about pressing needs facing women throughout the region and determine how to direct their funds.
During the first year of grantmaking, the membership decided to award grants to organizations that are helping economically disadvantaged women rebuild their lives and be more self-sufficient.
"We are looking for applicants that can supply safety net programs to prevent setbacks for women such as homelessness, joblessness, and hunger," said Carol Minton, chair of the grants committee. "We plan to fund groups that work cooperatively with others, address causes rather than symptoms, and make a lasting impact."
To be eligible for consideration, a nonprofit organization or public agency must meet specific guidelines and serve one or more of the 18 counties in the western North Carolina region.
To apply for a grant or become a member of Women for Women, visit Community Foundation of Western North Carolina or call 828-254-4960.
Happy Yule!
Posted by johndilbeck on Wednesday, December 21 2005 at 6:45 AM Category: ramblings
Today is the winter solstice, Yule Day, and winter arrives where I live early this afternoon.
If you hate winter, it's only three months until spring. Think warm thoughts.
For those of us who love winter, it's time to sleep bundled under comforters and quilts; to make snowmen, snow angels, and have snowball fights until we can't even feel our fingers; to try catching snowflakes on our tongues; to skate on frozen water; to sip hot cocoa next to a warm fire; and to do all the other dozens of things that we do while it is cold outside.
Light a new fire today -- whether it's a Yule log in your fireplace or a bonfire or a new candle and do your part to bring the sun back north.
Happy start of summer to my friends south of the equator. You know who you are.

Are you a lensmaster?
Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, December 17 2005 at 3:00 AM Category: websites
Here's why you should consider becoming one.
Squidoo opened their public beta testing a few days ago, and during this period, you can become a lensmaster and claim up to 20 lenses of your very own.
What's a lens?
Basically, it's an outpointing web page on a particular topic. What topic? That's up to you. What do you know about and love to write about. See if the topic is available. If not, find another page name and try again.
Write about yourself, your business, your hobby, the organization for which you volunteer, your family, your town or community. Write about what interests you.
This is a free service, and you may even make some money with your lenses. Now, the main money-making module is Amazon.com and you can sell any of the products Amazon sells from your lens.
There is full information about how the commission cooperative splits the commissions on the site.
After the beta period is over, you'll be able to claim as many lenses as you want. However, remember that frequency of updating your lens may possibly be one of the criteria that determines the lens rank, so you may not want more than you can comfortably handle.
Yes, this is a beta period and there have been some glitches. I've lost some descriptions as I was writing them, and now and then I lose contact with the system, but it has been remarkably easy to use, overall.
I've claimed and published my limit of lenses during the beta test. If you want, you can visit any of my 20 lenses:

Yesterday, I was very rude to someone. I want to apologize.
Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, December 10 2005 at 4:16 AM Category: ramblings
I don't know who you are; I only know you called me on the phone and I was rude.
I'm sorry.
You see, I answered pleasantly enough, and told you that you called at a very bad time.
You asked, "When would be a better time," pleasantly enough.
I said, "Not today!"
Then, you started to tell me who you were and I cut you off and said, "I can't talk to you right now," and hung up the phone.
It would not have caused any great commotion in the grand scheme of the universe if I'd taken just half-a-minute to tell you why it was a bad time.
But, I didn't.
After the connection was dead, it was too late.
I don't know who you are or why you called. I may have hung up on someone who would have become a great friend or a valued customer, but it won't happen now.
Yes, it was a bad time, but is there any excuse for being so rude to someone? I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not normally that way.
I have an excuse, but that's all it is.
You see, my mother fell and broke her leg yesterday morning (again). When you called, there were five people from the rescue squad trying to get her off the floor and back into her chair so we could take her to the hospital.
There were plenty of people helping her and I could have taken a moment to tell you why it was a bad time, but I was worried and frustrated, and just didn't do it.
We got her to the hospital, and then transferred her to another hospital to see an Orthopedic Surgeon. Both bones had clean breaks and didn't require surgery. We got back home almost exactly eleven hours after she fell, and now she's in bed with a cast and instructions not to walk on it. She's in quite a bit of pain -- it was painful before she broke that leg -- and it will be some time before it quits hurting.
Those were the things I was thinking about when I hung up that phone.
Now, 19 hours later, and with only about an hour of sleep, I'm still haunted by my unnecessary rudeness.
For that, I apologize to you, whomever you are.
All the best,
JD
