October 2004
Learn about building a profitable website with our free courses.
Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, October 30 2004 at 7:29 AM Category: webmaster_tools
The big lie about the Internet is that it's easy to make money. Just put up a website and everyone will come and buy what you offer and you can retire rich with no effort.
It's just not that easy. Anyone can put up a website in a few hours or days, but most of those sites die a slow death because of a lack of visitors and buyers.
However, it doesn't have to be that way. The key to a successful website is good quality content. People on the Internet are not searching for you, they're searching for information to help them solve a problem or accomplish a goal.
By providing that information in a format that is easily indexed by the search engines, those same search engines will send hundreds or thousands of visitors every month to your site for free. You don't have to keep advertising once you learn how to build a site that provides what people are searching for.
I learned about Ken Evoy when I first bought his ebook, Make Your Site Sell!. That was the best $17 I ever spent. He updated the book in 2002 to over 1500 pages of quality information and raised the price to $30. Now, the 2005 edition is very close to release and will be available at the link earlier in this paragraph.
Over the next four years, he and his team have built the best web design, website hosting, and website promotion service on the planet, and they sell this service for only about one dollar per day. I'm using Site Build It! to build A Year From Now and I'm seeing a steady increase in visitors every month, even though I won't go into full development on that site for another month.
I love the products that Ken sells, and I've arranged to give away -- free -- several of his ebooks, all of which are in Acrobat PDF format. If you go to the Free Ebooks category of the Downloads section, you can download any of the courses on that page at no charge.
The Net Auctions course sold for $30 just last year, and now it is offered free.
The SBI Action Guide is the first edition of the Site Build It! step-by-step guid to building a successful business on the Internet. This is not the current version, but Ken allows me to give this one away so you can learn about the process.
Even if you decide to go another way with your website, there is valuable information in all of these ebooks to help you be more successful with your online marketing efforts.
I'm happy to be able to offer them to you.

CherokeeCountyNC.com Is Ready for You
Posted by johndilbeck on Wednesday, October 27 2004 at 9:32 AM Category: cherokee_county_nc
It's taken several weeks to get to this point, and now CherokeeCountyNC.com is open and ready for you.
This site, unlike other sites that present information about Cherokee County, is designed to be interactive and to offer free tools for residents of Cherokee County, North Carolina to tell others about what you're doing to make our area a better place to live.
All you have to do is register -- for free -- and you can have your own Journal (weblog or blog) to talk about you or your organization. We have a forum where you can discuss topics of interest with other residents and visitors. Add links to your websites or websites you recommend. Submit articles, press releases, and announcements for publication. Submit events and meetings to be added to our Calendar of Events or our Standing Calendar Planner pages. Write reviews of books, movies, music, websites, or whatever. Comment on the reviews others write. Promote your organization, business, church, event, meeting, team, or group. All at no charge.
This is part of my on-going commitment to help nonprofits help the community. But, I'm also happy to offer the same tools to businesses and individuals.
More will be added to the site over the coming months, but it's ready to go, now.
If you know anyone in Cherokee County who would be interested, please pass the word along to them.

The new portal for Cherokee County, NC is coming along nicely
Posted by johndilbeck on Sunday, October 3 2004 at 7:51 AM Category: cherokee_county_nc
I've been working for a couple of weeks to create a new portal (CherokeeCountyNC.com) for Cherokee County, NC that will provide information to its visitors about the people, organizations, businesses, schools, and events in Cherokee County.
This portal will become much more valuable if you participate and help provide information about what you are doing. Register at the site -- it's free -- and add links to your favorite websites in the Web Links section. Get your own LoCalendar.com free calendar and publish your meetings and events as public items in your zip code. Submit press releases, news, and articles and we'll do our best to publish those that are suitable for the site.
Create your own journal (weblog). Write a review of a book, movie, website, or song and tell us your opinion. Post helpful comments. Rate articles and reviews. Vote in the polls and surveys.
If you think of something that you feel will make the site better and more useful, go to the Feedback section (in the Main Menu) and let me know. I'll seriously consider all feedback.
Over time, the goal is to make this your first destination whenever you go online. You can help make the site that useful.
New Public Calendar of Events for Cherokee County, NC
Posted by johndilbeck on Sunday, October 3 2004 at 7:48 AM Category: cherokee_county_nc
I've started maintaining a new public Calendar of Events for Cherokee County, NC.
I chose Localendar.com to manage this for several reasons, primarily because it is easy to merge multiple calendars into one display location.
For example, I'm currently merging the information I maintain in the Heritage Tourism Events in and around Murphy, NC calendar that is shown on several websites I manage.
Now, any time I add or modify an event in the Heritage Tourism Events calendar, it will be show automatically in the Cherokee County, NC calendar, too.
This becomes more powerful, and more useful, when other businesses and organizations in our area manage their calendars using the free Localendar.com service.
If you manage a calendar and would like your meetings and events to be shown on the Cherokee County, NC calendar I maintain, all you have to do is get a free account with Localendar.com and start publishing your items as public events in your zip code. Email me with the URL of your calendar. If it is suitable, I'll merge it into mine.
You can see this in action on the CherokeeCountyNC.com's Calendar of Events page.
Feel free to contact me if you have any comments or questions.
