Update on moving domains
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, January 31 2003 at 7:16 AM Category: (default)
As you may know, I manage a number of domains that were previously hosted by several different services. In November and December, 2002, I decided that it was time to pick a single hosting service and move all of my domains and the domains I manage for others to a single location where I could more efficiently manage them.
After analyzing dozens of webhosting services, my first choice was clearly Site Build It!, a service developed and marketed by Ken Evoy and his company. This service offers unmatched features, but the price is a bit steeper than I can justify right now. I do plan to develop one or more domains using his service later in the year, however.
If you're doing any kind of web marketing, you owe it to yourself to check this service out.
However, I was managing more-traditional sites that were already hosted on several different versions of Unix, and I didn't want to have to re-do everything. I knew it was going to be a big enough job as it was, because there were over 2,000 pages to be moved plus many hundreds of graphics and quite a few scripts that would have to be reconfigured or reprogrammed, and I didn't want to break any more links than were absolutely necessary.
I anticpated that it would take all of January and February, 2003, to move the sites and several more weeks to tweak and modify them to make them work as I wanted. Then I expected to take several more weeks remodeling the sites and adding new features.
As I explained in an earlier posting, I chose AssortedInternet as my new webhosting service, and I'm happy that I did. Their support has been fast, friendly, and accurate. Their prices and features are great. I couldn't be happier. I recommend them highly.
I've been working around the clock for a month on this project, taking naps when I had to, and I've finished one domain. GeorgiaDragRacing.com, a site with well over a thousand pages and about as many graphics, was the first I tackled. The move was done in less than 10 days. Then I spent two more weeks working with my brother, David, who owns the site, to redesign and remodel it so that he could do some things he's been wanting to do with the site. I just finished the redesign and I'm several weeks ahead of schedule. That's practically unheard of! ;^)
We're happy that Bogan Renfroe, owner of Renfroe Mining and Grading, has chosen to sponsor the site for 2003. Thanks, Bogan!
The next site that will be redesigned and updated is AHCcrafts.com, the website of the Appalachian Heritage Crafters cooperative in Murphy, NC. This will be a much smaller job than the other three sites that are being redesigned.
I'll also do a major reworking of JohnDilbeck.com, but that will probably be done over the next several months, and it will probably continue growing and changing for quite some time.
Also, during February, I'll be working on redesigning ArchAvary.com, the site for Arch Avary Originals. Prices are going to change, photos are going to be updated, and more material will be written and added to the site.
By the time I get this done, the weather should be warmer, and if Mom's health continues to improve, I'll be able to get up to the smithy and make some more of my Steel Roses That Never Wilt. I'm truly looking forward to smithing again, something that I wasn't able to do last year because Mom needed constant care.
So, if you wonder why I haven't been posting much, or updating JohnDilbeck.com very frequently, it's because I've been totally swamped with this project. Will it be worth it? Absolutely. I'm already able to do several things on the Georgia Drag Racing site that I couldn't do on the previous server, and I'll be able to do similar things on my other sites.
I also have four new sites on the drawing board, but they certainly won't be as large as some of the other sites I already manage.
Eventually, I'll be able to turn my attention back to marketing arts and crafts. I have some good ideas that I'm looking forward to sharing, and I have to recommend Barbara Brabec's new book to you. There's a link at the top of every page of JohnDilbeck.com. I'll be posting a review of the book in the next few days.
Now, it's back to the cave for me. I hope you're well and warm.
Why I chose AssortedInternet above the rest
Posted by johndilbeck on Wednesday, January 22 2003 at 2:28 PM Category: (default)
I was asked why I chose AssortedInternet.com above the others I compared them to.
In addition to their superb support, and great prices, they offer feature packed web hosting that includes: PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, CGI-BIN, shell access, FTP access, POP3 and SMTP email, a control panel, mailing lists, web based email, an up-to-date Perl with many installed modules, including ImageMagick, a bulletin board/forum, generous storage and bandwidth, and much more. See their web hosting page for a list and description of all the 40 standard features they offer.
You probably know by now, that when I find a good deal, I want to earn a bit of income from it. The same holds true for webhosting.
AssortedInternet has an excellent affiliate program. It is two-tier and pays 15% on the first level and 7.5% on the second. Not only that, but it also pays lifetime residuals as long as the person you refer is a customer and they have no minimum before they send you a check. My daughter signed up with AssortedInternet a few months ago, on my recommendation, and they've been sending me a check for $1.20 on a regular basis. How many other companies will do that?
And, that's not all. Most affiliate programs won't let you purchase from your own affiliate links. Assorted Internet's affiliate agreement specifically recommends that you become an affiliate and then sign up from your own link to earn a 15% commission, every month, for your own web hosting. Not a one-time 15% commission, but a recurring commission every month that you remain a customer, and you'll earn the same 15% commission every month for any customers you refer to them.
So, I did it. I became an affiliate several months ago, when I was investigating, and last month, I signed up for webhosting using my affiliate link, so I'll earn a commission every month from now on. Try that with other webhosting companies.
Would I have signed up just for the affiliate program and a commission on my own hosting? I'll be honest and tell you that I would not. But, it was a factor in my decision.
It basically comes down to the fact that I bought a bulk reseller account so that I can host multiple domains from a single control panel, and I can configure those domains as I need to so that I'll have optimum use of storage and bandwidth. If one of my domains needs 5 megabytes of storage and a half-gigabyte of bandwidth every month, I can set it up that way. If another needs 150 MB of storage and 3 gigabytes of bandwith, I can do that too. I have several domains that meet one of those criteria, so it is a flexible way to host all of them most efficiently.
To top it off, I'm paying approximately half of what I was paying every month and I'm getting better support and more features. How could I not move?
It was a huge job moving everything, but it's mostly done now. I'm happy with my new hosts, and I'll recommend them to you.
Do yourself a favor. Compare your webhosting account with what AssortedInternet.com offers, and pay particular attention to both price and features. Then, when you're convinced that they offer a great value for a good price, become an affiliate and then signup for a new account using your affiliate link. Right off the bat, you'll save another 15% each month.
You say you want free hosting? Become an affiliate, convince six more of your friends to switch to AssortedInternet (using your affiliate link), and your hosting will be free. Actually, as long as they purchase an account at the same or higher price than your new account, your account won't be free, you'll be earning money from it. Sign up more of your friends, and you'll get a regular check every month.
Check it out, today.
I'm happy that I did.
Changing to new server
Posted by johndilbeck on Wednesday, January 22 2003 at 6:40 AM Category: (default)
It's been a busy month!
I've been working night and day to move all the domains I manage to a new server (and that's over 2,000 pages and many scripts). For various reasons, I was being limited by my old hosting service, which mostly suited my needs for the last couple of years, but which wouldn't let me do some of the things I needed to do in the future.
So, I spent months looking for a new host that offered generous storage, good bandwidth, excellent service, and many other things I needed such as mysql databases, perl scripts, and various perl modules that are necessary for new services and features I want to incorporate into my sites.
I found several I can recommend, but after carefully comparing them, I chose AssortedInternet.com, and I recommend them highly. They have been responsive to my needs and offer accurate and timely support, good prices, and a great set of standard features.
Now, I can start expanding some of the features of JohnDilbeck.com, as well as the other domains I manage.
It's been a lot of work and, thankfully, has gone smoother than I feared.
