Arts and Crafts

I've started splitting this page into sub-pages. As I have time to add additional resources, these pages may be split into more subsections. Please see the menu to the left for more pages you may want to see. Also see Shopping - Crafts, if you're looking to purchase crafts. More to come when time allows.

Crafters are always on the lookout for high quality patterns and artwork that we can use on our projects. Dover Publications allows us to use their artwork on our projects royalty- and copyright-free. The terms for each book or art collection are listed with the publication, but normally, you can use up to a half-dozen or so pieces of artwork on a project with no problem, and if you need more, you can write for permission. You cannot provide this artwork as clip art, however, it must be used on a project of some sort. Here are a couple of links that will search Amazon.com and give a list of results:

The Dover Pictorial Archive series of books is the finest collection of royalty-free clip art, engravings, drawings, photographs, and other artwork on the planet -- at very reasonable prices.

Much of this art is also available already scanned and stored on CD-ROM in their Dover Electronic Clip Art.

I've listed several links to other sources of clip art on my Computers and Technology page under the Clip Art section, on my Graphics page, and on the Shopping - Clip Art page.

As you already know, whenever you are signing contracts, especially for financial services, it is a good idea to read the contract and all other terms and conditions carefully. Fees and penalties can be complicated, apparently with a purpose to confuse sometimes, and you should carefully evaluate which service will best meet your needs. Caveat Emptor

PayPal.com - Send money to, or receive money from, anyone with an email address using their secure servers for the actual transaction - Editor's Pick!

ProPay.com - Some artists and crafters have been happy with this service for credit card processing. I have no personal knowledge.

ClickBank - the online billing and marketing solution used by thousands of web businesses that deliver unique products and services over the Internet itself (via web pages, files, or email). Their payment technology lets any web business (a seller) automatically pay sales commissions to any other web business (an affiliate) that links a paying customer to the seller. ClickBank bills the customer, pays the seller, and pays the affiliate. Click on the link to learn more about becoming a seller or an affiliate.

If you're interested in ClickBank, let me recommend that you check out Jeff Mulligan's CBmall, a database-driven front-end to the top-selling products available through ClickBank.

Mailing Lists and Discussion Groups

(See also, books on mailing lists.)

The National Crafts Association was founded in 1983 and offers a variety of help and information to crafters of all experience levels. The very best resource I've found for professional crafters who help each other with their business and crafting issues is their mailing list: A Craft Biz Connection. You can learn more about that list and subscribe to it at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/acraftbizconnection. I highly recommend this list and I've learned a lot from the very helpful participants that you'll find there. You can find links to the websites of some of the subscribers of that list on my Crafts Biz Links page. - Editor's Pick!

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts - offers art classes and craft classes for everyone from the novice to the professional. They have a great staff, world-class instructors, and excellent facilities, all tucked away in a beautiful valley near Brasstown, North Carolina. Haystack Mountain School of Crafts - Since 1951 Maine has been the home of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. For a long time Haystack, along with Penland in North Carolina, Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, and a handful of other programs of national standing, were incubators for the two generations of craftspeople who created the American Crafts Renaissance.

Penland School of Crafts - a national center for craft education located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Penland offers one-, two-, and eight-week workshops in books & paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking, textiles, and wood.
