Richard Bannister has written a number of software emulators that run under Mac OS X. If you're looking to run a variety of game software on your new Macs, this is a good starting place. He even has a Mac Plus emulator that runs under OS X, in case you have some of those old games or other software lying around that require a 9-inch B&W screen. (grin) ** JD **
6:50:44 PMDo you hate it when people send you Microsoft Word files? -- I know I do.

If you have Mac OS X, you can now use DOCtor from Stone Design to convert that .DOC file into a PostScript .PS file. This utility is free. Then, if you have Stone Design's PStill (free demo download or purchase for about $70), you can convert the PostScript file into a PDF file that you can view or print from your favorite PDF viewer. Of course, this program can be used for converting other .PS files and EPS graphics into PDF format, too.
I haven't tried it so I can't comment on how well it works, but I thought this was worth passing along. ** JD **Do you need to manage schemas for SQL databases? - Check out SQLBoss.

This software runs natively in MacOS 8/9, Mac OS X, and Windows. You can download a 30 day evaluation copy or purchase a license through Kagi. SQLBoss is currently $95.00 and SQLBoss Developer is under $300.
If you're wanting to add dynamic database access using MySQL, PostgreSQL, and other similar databases, you should visit their site and judge for yourself. It looks good to me. ** JD **OS X for Legacy Macs - Version 2.0 of Unsupported UtilityX is now available, and it works with Mac OS X 10.1.

From their site: While Apple has limited its support for Mac OS X to those machines that originally came with a G3 or G4 processor, it is possible to install Mac OS X on some earlier machines. The unsupported machines that work now are the 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9600, as well the clones that were based on one of these systems (the Umax S900 and J700, and the Power Computing PowerWave and PowerTower Pro). The original processors in these machines will work, as will G3 or G4 upgrade cards. Other models that use the PCI architecture may be made to work in time. (Models based on the Nubus architecture are less likely to ever work with Mac OS X).
Note that this is unsupported and there are some reliability issues and things that just won't work (read carefully about the OS 9.1 and OS 9.2.1 issues). So read the docs carefully before deciding to try this. All the usual caveats apply. It is unsupported, after all. ** JD **Text Wielder is a native Mac OS X program that will let you do things such as search for text on your favorite search engine, check a stock quote, track a mail package, or clean up those messy email quotes all without ever leaving the application you're in.

Their page has a full list of the services in the package, a couple of screen shots, and a link for downloading. ** JD **
