ArchAvary.com is open for business!

We've been talking about this for years and working on it for months, and I am very happy to announce the opening of Arch Avary's website. There are still a few things to work out, but it's up and running.

Arch has been a great friend for almost two decades and I fell in love with his wearable wildlife when I first moved to the North Carolina mountains. I'm really excited about helping him market his Wearable Wildlife, River Sports, and Limited Editions, and even more.

You're invited to visit his site, and if you're interested, join his mailing list. ** JD **

Joerg Kantel suggested some modifications for my Microsoft-Free-Friday JavaScript. Apparently my version crashes MSIE-Mac.

You may not be aware of the brewing controversy over Microsoft's new Smart Tags. It looks like the 800 lb. Gorilla is stirring again, and some of us who don't want to be controlled by their continuing attempts to take over the Web are starting to respond. The java-script was written for Manilla web servers, but looks like it should work on other sites, too. (Update: See the modifications suggested in the next article.) ** JD ** The following was found on Scripting News, see following link: Jake Savin has a JavaScript that implements Microsoft-Free-Fridays. You can put this into your page template when you add the meta-tag to opt-out of Smart Tags. [Scripting News]   12:23:31 PM

I've had several people ask me recently what would be a good book to get started learning to build websites with HTML. Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to HTML, Graphics, and Beyond, by Jennifer Niederst and Richard Koman has been receiving some good reviews and comments. It will get you started and take you part-way into the advanced stage of website design, but, it doesn't cover everything. She has written several other excellent books, and you can link to them from the page linked here. Just remember that you don't have to know everything to build a decent website, and you don't have to load it with all kinds of fancy doo-dads that detract from what you're trying to say -- assuming you have something to say (or sell) in the first place. It took longer than I expected, and I had to think a little out of the box, but my weblog is now moved over from johndilbeck.editthispage.com to johndilbeck.com. I still don't have all the links to the archived pages, yet, but I'll get them constructed as soon as I can. In the meantime, I can switch my attention to other, more pressing matters. In the long run, I'll be happy having my weblog in its new location, but it was a distraction for a few days. Hope I didn't bother you too much as I was getting it worked out. Until I get the indices built, you can see (assuming you're the least bit interested) the directory listings for my archived ramblings for year 2000 and for year 2001 -- both of these will be replaced by actual web pages eventually. Now, back to the business at hand! ** JD **   8:23:59 AM
