Last night, I attended a meeting of the Cherokee County Small Farmers Association, a group that came together in the spring of 2001 to support small farmers in Cherokee County. They have three goals: (1) Helping expand income from farming, by supporting both group and individual agricultural projects, (2) Preserving and promoting the farm heritage and culture of Cherokee County, (3) Involving more young people in agriculture.

The Association is currently starting a Farmers Market for products grown in Cherokee County and surrounding counties in North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.

Their next meeting will be June 12, 2001, starting at 6:30 pm, downstairs at Centura Bank in Murphy. If you'd like to participate or get more information, call John at 828-494-3155.

I'm hoping there will be ways that the Farmers Association and Appalachian Heritage Crafters can work together to help preserve and promote our common heritage.

Speaking of our common heritage, Heritage Partners is having a meeting tomorrow, June 7, at the L&N Depot in Murphy from 5:30pm - 7:30pm. I'll be attending and invite you to attend if you're interested in what we're doing.

Heritage Partners is a coalition of many people and organizations with a wide variety of dreams and visions for the future of Cherokee County. The motto of Heritage Partners is "Building on Our Past, to Secure Our Future." This motto reflects Heritage Partners commitment to sustainable heritage tourism and economic development while preserving and enhancing Cherokee County's natural resource.

For more information, you can contact Melissa Block at 828-835-3535, or write to Heritage Partners, 25 Hatchet Street, Murphy, NC 28906.

Both of these groups are working to make our little corner of the world a better place to live. You are invited to attend either or both of these meetings and to get involved in helping. **JD**
