Learning to engrave glass. (04/22/2001 15:23 EDT) I've been a busy boy this week. The weather has been weird. We had snow early in the week, so I did a lot of work with computer graphics for some designs I'm going to be making, soon. Then it warmed up into the high 70s and low 80s and I spent the rest of the time in my shop.
I took some of the new designs and engraved them into a few glass articles this week. I'm starting to be able to control the diamond bur (using a flex shaft) and I was pleased with several of the items I made.
In the near future, I'll be announcing an expansion to my business: Dilbeck Lightcarving. Soon, I'll be able to create articles in wood, stone, leather, glass, and a variety of materials, and I'll be able to use the same designs in all these media. Using a mix of technologies, including etching with acids, electro-etching, electro-forming, electro-plating, engraving, and graphics modified on the computer and printed to either paper or to a laser, I'll be able to offer a variety of products that combine technologies ranging from several thousand years ago up to the newest methods of the 21st century. It's still a little early to give the details and information about pricing and availability, so I'll have to be content with this little teaser, for now.
I love making Steel Roses, but, let's face it, there's a limited demand for them. Some of you, like me, love them and others couldn't care much less. So, I'll be offering a variety of items using the same basic designs spread across several media and price points.
In the mean-time, I have to prepare for two shows and the opening of the Appalachian Heritage Crafters' new store, so I have to get back to work and produce lots of items. In late June and July, I'll put Dilbeck Lightcarving together and announce it.
It's going to be a fun summer!!

(04/22/2001 14:36 EDT) My friend, David Pursglove, sent me an announcement about the series of New Being seminars they'll be hosting starting in August, 2001. It looks like a very interesting series and I wish I were closer so I could attend some of them.
I've known David for over a decade (thanks to the Internet) and I've had some very interesting and enlightening conversations with him over the years. I greatly enjoyed reading the book he edited, "Zen in the Art of Close Encounters: Crazy Wisdom and UFOs."
