Among the other things she has to say, Monique points out:

"2) Focus your energy.

"You cannot be everything to everybody. Pick a niche - just one niche - and embody it completely. Make it yours to the very fiber of your being. "

Want a phone number that spells a word? (1/20/2001 04:53 EST) I'm not convinced that a phone number that spells a word (a handy mnemonic device, in most cases) is a good idea for a business.

On one hand, some customers are more likely to call. I can still remember my ISP's main number because of the handy mnemonic that was originally chosen.

On the other hand, having a number that's easy to remember may mean we won't write it down, and then the cute, easy-to-remember number slips from our minds.

Either way, if you're interested in this topic, here are three sites you may want to visit. Clicking the title will take you to the first one (for no particular reason).

The Epicene Pronouns: A Chronology of the Word That Failed. (1/20/2001 01:57 EST) Are you tired of trying to find the perfect epicine pronoun?

I'm tired of saying 'him or her' or various combinations of the same thing. 'Hir' comes close, but not quite. 'It' works, but people of both sexes tend to get insulted when verbally neutered.

Being a bit of a word nerd, I found the short essay on "The Epicene Pronouns: A Chronology of the Word That Failed, " by Dennis Baron, Professor of English and Linguistics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to be an interesting read.

This has been a problem for quite some time, and it seems most efforts have failed. And continue to fail.

To KISS or Not to KISS! (1/20/2001 01:17 EST) I just posted an interesting article by Chrisi Darrington, and you can click the title to read it.

From the article:

"It doesn't matter what you say on your website if your web design shouts out amateur to your visitors. It's very difficult to get people to feel secure about buying online and if yours shouts amateur, it will send them running, not buying.

"When in doubt, leave it out and keep it simple - not silly. You really *can* make money online. People are buying products and services every day and others are building a home based business from their websites. If you're not selling, look and see if your website design will KISS or KILL your way to success."

It's worth a read.
